U.S. Citizenship And Naturalization

Naturalization to U.S. Citizen

Naturalization is the process for applying become a U.S. citizen. In general, a person may qualify for naturalization if they are at least 18 years old and have been a permanent resident for at least 5 years (or 3 years if they are married to and residing with a U.S. citizen) and meet all other eligibility requirements. A person may also qualify for naturalization based on military service, which has different requirements.

Eligibility for naturalization based on being a lawful permanent resident for at least five (5) years:

  • Be at least 18 years old when they submit the application for naturalization.

  • Show they have been a lawfully admitted permanent resident of the United States for at least five years.

  • Not be absent from the U.S. for 6 months of more at any one time during those five (5).

  • Show they have been physically present in the United States for at least 30 months out of the five years immediately before the date they file your application for naturalization.

  • Be at least 18 when they submit their application for naturalization.

  • Be a lawfully admitted permanent resident of the United States for at least three (3) years immediately before the date they file their application for naturalization.

  • Not be absent from the U.S. for 6 months of more at any one time during

       those three (3) years.

  • Be physically present in the United States for at least 18 months out of the  three (3) years immediately before the date they file their application for naturalization.

  • Have been living in marital union with their U.S. citizen spouse during the three years immediately before the date they file their application and while ​USCIS adjudicates their application for naturalization​.

  • Have lived for at least three (3) months in a state or USCIS district having  jurisdiction over their place of residence.

  • Be able to read, write and speak English and have knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of the history, and of the principles and  form of government, of the United States (also known as civics); and

  • Be a person of good moral character, attached to the principles of the Constitution of the United States, and well-disposed to the good order and happiness of the United States for least five (or three years if  based on marriage)immediately before the date they file the application for naturalization and until they take the Oath of Allegiance.
